How long to rest between sets

Rest about 2 to 3 minutes between sets of heavy compound lifts and 1 to 2 minutes on smaller exercises. Rest too little and you lose reps on the next set; rest much longer and you mostly lose time.

Why rest matters

Muscle and strength come from hard sets with enough reps. If you start the next set still out of breath, you get fewer reps out of it, and the set does less. Studies comparing short and longer rests generally find more muscle growth with rests of two minutes or more on compound lifts, mostly because people lift more in total.

Past a few minutes, extra rest adds little. It makes the session longer, which makes it easier to skip.

Rest by feel, with a timer as a guide

You are ready for the next set when your breathing has settled and you are confident you can hit your target reps. A timer keeps you honest: rests drift to five minutes when you check your phone, and shrink to forty seconds when the gym is busy.

Saving time without losing progress

  • Pair exercises that don’t compete: a set of curls, then a set of triceps pushdowns, then rest. Each muscle still gets its full rest.
  • Keep the long rests for the big lifts and go shorter on isolation work at the end of the session.
  • Do fewer, harder sets rather than many easy ones with short rests. See what counts as a hard set.

The rest timer in Musclist

Musclist starts a rest timer as soon as you save a set and buzzes once when it reaches zero, while the app is open. Tap −30 s or +30 s during a rest and Musclist remembers that length for that exercise, so your squat can rest three minutes and your curls ninety seconds. You can change the default or turn the timer off in Settings.
